ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARDINALS IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?

 Are there different types of Cardinals in the Catholic Church? 



Yes, there are different types of cardinals within the Catholic Church. The highest-ranking cardinals are known as Cardinal Bishops. They are typically bishops of the suburbicarian sees, which historically were located near Rome. The suburbicarian sees include Ostia, Velletri-Segni, Albano, Frascati, Palestrina, and Porto-Santa Rufina. Only nine Cardinals hold the title of Cardinal Bishops in the World. 


These cardinals have a special role in the governance of the Church and are usually assigned to specific duties within the Roman Curia, the administrative apparatus of the Holy See.


The next rank of cardinals is known as Cardinal Priests. They are usually diocesan bishops or archbishops from various parts of the world. Most cardinals fall into this category.


The third rank is Cardinal Deacons. These cardinals are usually senior officials of the Roman Curia or bishops who have been honoured for their service to the Church. They are often appointed as cardinals before being ordained as bishops.


It's important to note that while cardinals are usually bishops, the Pope can also appoint priests as cardinals. These priests are known as Cardinal-Priests, even though they have not been ordained as bishops. This is a rare occurrence and typically happens to recognise exceptional contributions to theological scholarship or other areas of expertise.


Cardinals are appointed by the Pope and serve as his advisors. They are selected from among the bishops and, in some cases, priests of the Catholic Church. 


The College of Cardinals plays a crucial role in the election of a new Pope when the papal seat becomes vacant.
